As the weather gets cooler, it’s time to transition your haircare routine to maintain and protect your extensions.

Let's get one thing straight: Hair behaves differently in every season. In addition to temps dropping and rising, humidity is a strong factor in how your hair looks. Too much humidity and it's frizz city; too little and hello, breakage.

In fact, the drier the climate the more prone your hair will be to dryness and split ends. This is bad news, not just for your hair but for your hair extensions, too.

But in true The Coveted fashion, we're not letting your hair go through fall alone. Below, we have the best tips on how to take care of your hair extensions and keep them in the best shape possible.

1. Introduce A Lot of Hydration

The shift into fall often means decreased humidity, which can affect the moisture levels of your extensions. Combat this with a hydrating (sulfate-free, of course!) shampoo and conditioner specifically designed for hair extensions.

Gently massage them into your locks, allowing the nourishing ingredients to penetrate into the hair. Make sure to thoroughly cleanse in between your wefts, as well as completely rinse out any excess conditioner to avoid any stickiness or matting.

2. Don't Be Shy with the Hair Oil

As the temperatures drop, it’s crucial to protect your extensions from extreme cold and dryness. Before stepping outside, apply a quality hair oil to shield your hair from the harsh elements. This will help lock in moisture while keeping your natural and faux strands soft and silky.

3. Gently Brush Throughout the Day

A lack of moisture in the air often causes static, along with matting and tangling. So invest in a high-quality, soft-bristle brush to maintain the quality of your hand-tied extensions.

Go for a travel-sized brush you can carry when you’re on the go, and brush your hair and extensions several times throughout the day. Make sure to do it gently, starting from the ends of your hair and working your way up, ensuring there are no tangles or knots.

4. Spruce Up Your Bedtime Routine

Nighttime is your hair's rest and rejuvenation period. Secure your extensions in a loose braid or ponytail to prevent tangling while you sleep. If you can, also opt for a silk or satin pillowcase to minimize friction and keep your locks sleek and smooth. Come morning, you'll wake up to gorgeous hair.

5. Take Temperature Controlled Showers

As the fall chill sets in, you may be tempted to crank the heat in your shower, but resist the urge to indulge in steaming bathroom sessions—as relaxing as they seem.

High water temperatures can strip your extensions of their natural oils and moisture. To keep your locks lush and hydrated, opt for lukewarm water as much as possible.

6. Protect Your Extensions Against Excessive Heat

We know how hard it is to dry hair in fall and winter. You're not alone in wanting to reach for that blow dryer to quicken the process.

While blow drying does cut down on time, excessive heat can be harsh on your hair extensions. If you have to (and we mean really have to) use them, always apply a heat protectant first and keep the temperature on the lower side to preserve the health of your extensions.

To avoid relying on blowdryers in the fall, why not create heat-free waves instead? Our Sleep by Covet & Mane set includes a silk WaveRod and a turban to create luscious waves while protecting your hair as you snooze.

With these expert-approved air tips, your hand-tied extensions will maintain their allure throughout the season.
