Maintaining your hair extensions requires more than just using the correct washing and conditioning methods and hair products. To keep them healthy and tangle-free, they need the simplest haircare practice ever: brushing them 2 to 3 times a day.
In this quick guide, we’ll walk you through the steps to elevate your hair brushing routine to extend your hair extensions' lifespan.
Why Do You Have to Brush Your Hair Extensions?
When hair gets matted and tangled, it not only looks unruly but can damage the strands. The same happens for hair extensions, which will also affect your real hair.
Brushing them regularly helps maintain your hair extensions' healthy and vibrant look, making them a worthy investment!
How to Find the Right Brush
We recommend an extension-safe brush. This just means a wet brush designed to detangle hair or a brush with wide-tooth plastic bristles.
As much as we love boar bristle brushes, they're not suitable for hair extensions as the fine fibers can actually catch the wefts and ruin them.
Daily Hair Brushing Guide
Approach hair brushing with precision. Focus on each row individually, avoiding contact with the top of your wefts—the anchor of your extensions—to prevent unnecessary strain and damage.
Step 1: Moisturize
Prepare your extensions by lightly misting them with a leave-in conditioner or a detangling spray. This preps the wefts and real hair for seamless brushing.
Step 2: Start from The Bottom
Brush from the ends of your extensions, working your way upwards with patience and care.
Step 3: Provide Support
While brushing, hold the base of your hair or the top of the extension rows for extra support. This reduces any strain on your natural hair.
Step 4: Be Consistent
Dedicate a few moments, 2 to 3 times a day, to gently brush your extensions. We also recommend brushing them before sleeping to prevent damage and knots. And if you're always on the go? Get a mini brush you can keep in your bag so you can help your hair extensions look healthy throughout the day!
